Atargatis


The mother goddess who was worshipped in ancient times throughout northern Syria.  In some works of art,   she is depicted as a mermaid, while in others she is a woman carrying a cornucopia.   Atargatis is said to have possessed nine different aspects.  Her sacred animals are the lion, the fish, and the dolphin.
