Arachne
A Roman goddess who presided over the craft of weaving, and whose name is the Greek word for "spider". According to mythology, Arachne was a woman of Colophon who wove beautifully. She unwisely challenged the goddess Minerva to a trial of skill, but was defeated and hanged herself in despair. Afterward, Minerva changed Arachne into a spider so she could forever weave her webs of silk.
